A Guide to RFCs

This material (except for the RFC index) originally appeared in Internetworking With TCP/IP Volume 1: Principles Protocols, and Architecture , and is used with the permission of the author, Douglas Comer.

Introduction

Most of the written information about TCP/IP and the connected Internet, including its architecture, protocols, and history, can be found in a series of reports known as Request For Comments or RFCs. An informal, loosely coordinated set of notes, RFCs are unusually rich in information and color. Before we consider the more serious aspects of RFCs, it is fitting that we take a few minutes to pay attention to the colorful side. A good place to begin is with Cerf's poem 'Twas the Night Before Start-up (RFC 968), a humorous parody that describes some of the problems encountered when starting a new network. Knowing not to take itself too seriously has pervaded the Internet effort. Anyone who can remember both their first Internet meeting, filled with networking jargon, and Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky, filled with strangely twisted English, will know exactly why D. L. Covill put them together in ARPAWOCKY (RFC 527). Anyone that has read Knuth's The Art Of Computer Programming may chuckle over RFC 473 asking where on the ARPANET one could execute MIX programs. We can imagine Pickens filled with pride when responding with RFC 485, MIX and MIXAL at UCSB. The University of California at Santa Barbara wasn't alone in offering MIX to the world. In RFC 494, Walden provides a list of all hosts on the network that supported MIX programming.

Other RFCs seem equally frivolous. Interspersed amid the descriptions of ideas that would turn out to dramatically change networking, we find notes like RFC 416, written in early November, 1972: The ARC System will be Unavailable for Use During Thanksgiving Week. It says exactly what you think it says. Or consider Crispin's tongue-in-cheek humor found in RFC 748, which describes the TELNET Randomly-Lose Option (a proposed option for TELNET that makes it randomly drop characters). If notes like that do not seem insignificant, think about the sixty seven RFCs listed as never issued. They were all assigned a number and had an author, but none ever saw the light of day. All that remains are the holes in the numbering scheme, preserved as little reminders of ideas that vaporized or work that remains incomplete.

Even after the silly, lighthearted, and useless RFCs have been removed, the remaining documents do not conform to most standards for scientific writing. Unlike scholarly scientific journals that concentrate on identifying papers of important archival interest, screening them carefully, and filing them for posterity, RFCs provide a record of ongoing conversations among the principals involved in designing, building, measuring, and using the global Internet. The reader understands at once that RFCs include the thoughts of researchers on the leading edge of technological innovation, not the studied opinions of scholars who have completely mastered a subject. The authors are not always sure of the consequences of their proposals, or even of the contents, but they clearly realize the issues are too complex to understand without community discussion.

Despite the inconsistencies in RFCs that sometimes make them difficult for beginners to understand, the RFC mechanism has evolved and now works extremely well. Because RFCs are available electronically, information is propagated to the community quickly. Because they span a broad range of interests, practitioners as well as designers contribute. Because they record informal conversations, RFCs capture discussions and not merely final conclusions. Even the disagreements and contradictory proposals are useful in showing what the designers considered before settling on a given protocol (and readers interested in the history of a particular idea or protocol can use RFCs to follow it from its inception to its current state).

Importance Of Host And Gateway Requirements Documents

Unlike most RFCs, which concentrate on a single idea or protocol, three special RFCs cover a broad range of protocols. The special documents are entitled Requirements for Internet Gateways and Requirements for Internet Hosts (parts 1 and 2).

The requirements documents were published in the late 1980s, after many years of experience with the TCP/IP protocols, and are considered a major revision to the protocol standards. In essence, requirement documents each review many protocols. They point out known weaknesses or ambiguities in the RFCs that define the protocols, state conventions that have been adopted by vendors, document problems that occur in practice, and list solutions to those problems that have been accumulated through experience. The RFCs for individual protocols have not been updated to include changes and updates from the requirements documents. Thus, readers must be careful to always consult the requirements documents when studying a particular protocol.

How To Obtain An RFC Over The Internet

RFCs are available electronically from many repositories around the world. Check with your local network administrator to find the site nearest you. If you cannot find a site, use the instructions given below to access the RFC Editor's archive site.

The Internet domain name for the host that provides WWW access to the archive is:

www.rfc-editor.org

FTP access to the archive is available through:

ftp.rfc-editor.org

To obtain a copy of the text file for an RFC directly from the archive, use the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) on a computer attached to the Internet. After invoking an FTP client, supply retrieval commands. First, issue the user command to identify yourself to the remote server. Supply the user name anonymous and the password yourid@yoursite.dom (your e-mail address) when prompted. Once the server acknowledges your name and password, use the get command to retrieve a file named:

get in-notes/rfcN.txt LocalFile

where N is the number of the RFC desired, and LocalFile is the name of a file into which the ftp program should place a copy.

NOTE: A few RFCs are only available in postscript; their names end in .ps

For example, to obtain a copy of RFC 822, issue the command:

get in-notes/rfc822.txt LocalFile

The retrieved file will contain ASCII text with a form feed character separating each page and a newline (line feed) character separating each line. Except for the newline and form feed characters, the entire file contains printable text that can be rendered with a conventional line printer. No line drawings or other special graphics are included.

The following UNIX command script illustrates how one might build a program that uses FTP to retrieve an RFC:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
#! /bin/sh
#
# rfc - UNIX (Bourne) shell script to obtain a copy of one or more RFCs,
# keeping a local cache for subsequent requests.
#
# use: rfc number [number...]
#
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/ucb
PUB=/usr/pub/RFC
RFCED=ftp.rfc-editor.org
for i in $*
do      if test ! -r $PUB/RFC.$i -o $i = "-index"
        then echo Retrieving RFC $i from RFCED >&2
#
# invoke FTP under UNIX and feed it retrieval commands as input.
#
                ftp -n $RFCED  >/dev/null 2>&1 <&2
        fi
done
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The script shown above does more than use FTP to retrieve an RFC. It leaves a copy of the RFC in directory /usr/pub/RFC. The advantage of keeping a local copy of an RFC is that subsequent requests are much faster than the first because they do not use FTP nor do they pass information across the Internet. If the script finds one of the requested RFCs in the cache, it merely presents the user with a copy. Note that the script does not look in the cache when retrieving the special file -index, because the index contains a list of all RFCs and will change as new RFCs appear.

How To Obtain An RFC Through Electronic Mail

The RFC Editor site and many other sites operate information servers that respond to electronic mail messages. That is, one sends an electronic mail message to a special e-mail address, a computer program reads the incoming mail, consults its database of information, and returns an answer using e-mail. The e-mail address of the information server at the RFC Editor site is:

rfc-info@ftp.rfc-editor.org

        Retrieve: RFC
        Doc-ID: RFCNNNN

where NNNN is the number of an RFC (NNNN must be four digits long and include leading zeros if necessary). For more information, send a message that contains the single line:

help

Browsing Through RFCs

There are several indexes that can help one browse through RFCs. First, the file in-notes/rfc-index.txt contains an accurate list of all RFCs listed in chronological order. It is kept at the archive along with text files for the RFCs. Anyone can obtain the index file using FTP or e-mail; users who plan to browse through RFCs usually obtain the index first to verify that they know about the latest RFCs. Second, many RFCs contain summaries or index other RFCs. For example, RFC 899 contains an index of all RFCs numbered 800 through 899, in reverse chronological order. Third, readers often need to know which RFC contains the latest version of an official Internet protocol or which protocols are official and which are unofficial. To accommodate such needs, the IAB periodically publishes an RFC entitled INTERNET OFFICIAL PROTOCOL STANDARDS, which provides a list of all protocols that have been adopted as TCP/IP standards, along with the number of the most recent RFC or RFCs describing each protocol. In addition RFC 1602, The Internet Standards Process - Revision 2, describes the Internet standardization process and defines the meaning of the terms proposed standard, draft standard, Internet standard, required, recommended, and historic.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) at The University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute publishes information about protocol constants in RFCs entitled Internet Numbers. The Internet Numbers RFCs contain values used in various fields of the official protocols (e.g., the Internet Numbers RFC specifies that the protocol field in an IP datagram header must contain the value 6 when the datagram contains a TCP segment).

Included below is a copy of the RFC Index, with links from the referenced RFCs to the text of those RFCs available on this Web site.

RFC INDEX

(CREATED ON: 5/15/2003.)

This file contains citations for all RFCs in numeric order.

RFC citations appear in this format:

RFC#### Title of RFC. Author 1, Author 2, Author 3. Issue date. (Format: ASCII) (Obsoletes xxx) (Obsoleted by xxx) (Updates xxx) (Updated by xxx) (Also FYI ####)

Key to citations:

#### is the RFC number.

Following the number are the title (terminated with a period), the author, or list of authors (terminated with a period), and the date (terminated with a period).

The format and byte information follows in parenthesis. The format lists some combination of ASCII text (TXT), PostScript (PS), and/or Adobe (PDF), each followed by an equals sign and the number of bytes for that version. For example (Format: TXT=aaaaa, PS=bbbbbb bytes) shows that the ASCII text version is aaaaa bytes, and the PostScript version of the RFC is bbbbbb bytes.

Obsoletes xxxx refers to other RFCs that this one replaces; Obsoleted by xxxx refers to RFCs that have replaced this one. Updates xxxx refers to other RFCs that this one merely updates but does not replace); Updated by xxxx refers to RFCs that have updated (but not replaced) this one. Only immediately succeeding and/or preceding RFCs are indicated, not the entire history of each related earlier or later RFC in a related series.

The (Also FYI ##) or (Also STD ##) phrase gives the equivalent FYI or STD number if the RFC was also issued in those document sub-series.

For example:
RFC1129 Internet time synchronization: The Network Time Protocol. Mills, D.L. October 1989. (Format: PS=551697 bytes)
Details on obtaining RFCs via FTP or EMAIL may be obtained by sending an EMAIL message to: rfc-info@ISI.EDU with the message body help: ways_to_get_rfcs.

For example:

	To: rfc-info@ISI.EDU
	Subject: getting rfcs

	help: ways_to_get_rfcs
